Canterbury
The Riverside is a £115 million mixed use development at the centre of a new leisure quarter in the historic City of Canterbury. Developed and delivered by Bouygues UK.
The development has a new public square at its heart and overlooks the River Stour that runs through the city centre. This leisure-led destination is anchored by a 5 screen, iconic Curzon Cinema. Restaurants and bars wrap around the new public square, which include external seating and areas to house pop-up events to animate and enliven the public realm.
The wider development also delivered 189 new homes and 491 student bedrooms, all within a pedestrian friendly neighbourhood that knits into the existing community.
Bouygues UK managed three parts of this major urban regeneration project; we are the development partners of Canterbury County Council; we built the project; and we operate the student accommodation, maintaining a long term interest in the project.
Bouygues UK delivered the scheme using modern methods of construction. The Riverside student accommodation block was built using modular construction, which enabled us to deliver higher levels of quality for end users and save time on site when compared to traditional methods of construction, minimising the disruption to local residents and stakeholders.
The Riverside will create scores of jobs, deliver almost 200 new homes and enhance the city’s entertainment offer, at the same time as transforming a derelict area in the city centre. This project will also draw people along Northgate, boosting the businesses there, improving pedestrian and cycle links into the city from the east, creating new areas of publicly accessible open space and improving landscaping along, and access to the River Stour.
