Spotlight on Yasmin Tugbobo
Did you know that we have Graduate Scheme at Bouygues UK?
In fact, we invest heavily in it. Graduates who join us benefit from an extensive range of personal and professional development opportunities, and a strong support network.
We spoke to Yasmin Tugbobo, in her first year of our Graduate Scheme to find out more about her experience at Bouygues UK so far. Here’s what she had to say.
Who are you and what is your role?
My name is Yasmin Tugbobo and my current role is Graduate Assistant Site Manager.
What do you do in your day to day?
In my day to day, I manage the internal fit-out of a 39-unit residential block at the regeneration project I am currently working on in Camden, Maitland Park. The scheme contains 119 new fit-for-purpose homes in a variety of sizes to suit the housing needs of the borough. My role involves a lot of liaising with the subcontractors to meet the requirements of their contracts and the scheduled programme.
What’s the biggest challenge in your role?
My biggest challenge is ensuring that the daily construction works meet the deadlines set out in the scheduled programme. Any changes such as late deliveries, lack of labour or even train strikes can have an impact on the ongoing works. This challenge can be overcome by planning as much as possible and allowing for extra time in the programme.
What do you enjoy about your role?
In my role, I enjoy learning every day. Whilst working, I get real experience of life as a Site Manager and can put the knowledge I learnt at university into practice.
What are you most proud of since starting out at Bouygues UK?
Since starting with Bouygues UK in May 2022, I am most proud of seeing the block I manage go from being an empty canvas to fitted-out flats and knowing that I played a part in making that happen.
What is a common misconception about your role?
A common misconception about my role is that it is a man’s role. Some believe the construction industry is exclusive to men, this is far from true as I have met a lot of women working within the construction industry since starting with Bouygues UK.
What do you like most about working at Bouygues UK?
What I like most about working with Bouygues UK is that it has led to endless opportunities such as meeting inspirational people who I can learn from and network with. I also love being part of the Graduate Scheme which, in the long term, will allow me to become chartered, and gain recognition for my competency in the field.
What would you say to someone considering applying for the Graduate Scheme?
I would advise them to be open to all opportunities, even if the role you are applying to does not seem directly correlated to your degree. For example, I studied MEng Civil Engineering and I work within Site Management, but I see many aspects of my degree in my role. As a result, I know I am learning a much wider variety of skills.
Where do you see yourself this time next year?
This time next year, I see myself coming towards the end of my second project on the Bouygues UK graduate scheme, having gained a lot of knowledge and experience. I hope to be on track to be offered a permanent position with Bouygues UK as a Site Manager.
