Spotlight On Jake Gomm
Did you know that we have Graduate Scheme at Bouygues UK?
In fact, we invest heavily in it. Graduates who join us benefit from an extensive range of personal and professional development opportunities, and a strong support network.
We spoke to Jake Gomm, in his second year of the Graduate Scheme to find out more about his experience at Bouygues UK so far. Here’s what he had to say!
Tell us a bit about what you do.
I’m currently working at Wornington Green Phase 2B as a Graduate Design Coordinator.
Day to day I attend design workshops with consultants, review packages of information ready for construction, and track design progress through the use of various excel trackers. My current focus is on building control and planning submissions.
What is the biggest challenge in your role?
The biggest challenge in my role is balancing lots of different tasks with similar deadlines. Often, I will have multiple pieces of work that are due at the same time. To ensure I meet these deadlines, I regularly update my to do list and write myself a plan of what I want to achieve each day.
What to you enjoy about your role?
I enjoy the variety of the tasks I carry out within my role. No two days are the same which keeps you on your toes and makes work interesting and dynamic.
As a graduate, I am given responsibilities that push me out of my comfort zone and allow me to learn. I am trusted by my team, and as a result we all have a very good working relationship which makes my role even more enjoyable.
What are you most proud of since starting out at Bouygues UK?
I am most proud of the various volunteering opportunities I have undertaken, particularly volunteering in local schools. You can always tell that the students benefit from having industry professionals come in and speak with them. Most recently, I was running mock interviews with sixth form students alongside the Construction Youth Trust.
What is a common misconception about your role?
A common misconception is that all you do is review the design. Design Management is a multi-faceted role which includes submissions to various authorities, achieving certain sustainability targets, client facing meetings, liaising with the procurement and production teams, and many other tasks outside of pure design work.
Can you tell us about the project you are currently working on?
I’m currently working on Wornington Green Phase 2B. Wornington Green is a 230-unit residential redevelopment, located on Portobello Road in North Kensington. The scheme contains mixed-tenure flats, maisonettes, and mews houses. We are currently doing all the groundworks, with the project due to finish in the summer of 2024.
How do you think the Graduate Scheme will benefit your development in the long term?
The Graduate Scheme has allowed me to be far more aware of all areas of the business and get involved in many volunteering opportunities. The Graduate Project allowed me to work with graduates from other entities, which has given me a broader network, something I believe will be invaluable going forward.
What would you say to someone considering applying for the Graduate Scheme?
Do it! I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time on the Graduate Scheme. Make the most of all the opportunities, such as volunteering, the Graduate Challenge, the Graduate Residential and many more.
Where do you see yourself this time next year?
This time next year I hope to still be at Wornington Green, nearing completion! I hope to have greater technical knowledge which will allow me to be more involved in reviewing consultant information packages.
