Bouygues was founded by Francis Bouygues in 1952 and listed on the Paris Stock Exchange in 1970. During the 1980s, the company acquired road construction groups Screg, Sacer and Colas, and started operating the television channel TF1. In 1996 the company launched Bouygues Télécom, and this was followed in 2006 by the acquisition of 23.26% of Alstom in 2006.
Bouygues entered the UK construction market in 1997. In recent years, we have increased our presence and capability in the UK through organic growth and with the acquisitions of Warings, Thomas Vale, Leadbitter and Denne.
Warings has a long and distinguished history, particularly in the Southern region. William Waring and Sons was formed in 1911 and 1927, James Warings moved the company to Portsmouth. During the Second World War, Warings was wholly engaged on government works, including sections of the Mulberry Harbour, defence works at Portland and a runway at Lee-on-the-Solent.
A major milestone in the Warings history was in 1968 with the contract award for the Portsmouth Harbour reclamation scheme. The early seventies saw the expansion of activities with the emphasis switching from civil engineering to building. This transition was reinforced by the Holiday Inn (now Marriott Hotel) contract at North Harbour in 1979, which was followed by many other notable design and build projects serving as landmarks to Warings’ progression.
Bouygues acquired Warings in 2007 and officially transferred to Bouygues UK on January 1st 2014.
In 1869, Thomas Vale, a young Victorian engineer, designed and built the unique cast iron bridge spanning the River Severn at Stourport in the county of Worcestershire. This was to be the first of many projects, with the company becoming very established and charting an enviable record of achievement in construction, civil engineering and services.
The bridge still stands today, sporting cast iron shields on each spandrel, and it is these, designed by Thomas Vale more than 140 years ago that became the basis for the company’s corporate identity. The company mixes skills with professional management and modern technology, ensuring a reputation of quality, integrity and service.
Thomas Vale was acquired by Bouygues in 2011.
The first foundations were laid to form Leadbitter in 1971 in Oxfordshire. Over the years, the company built up a network of regional offices through the central, east, south and south west of England, and South Wales for clients in both construction and housing markets.
Employees are proud to work for a company which maintains local links and supports community activities and are excited by the prospect of constructing schools, hospitals and community facilities which they, their families and friends will use.
Leadbitter was acquired by Bouygues in 2011.
George Henry Denne founded Denne in 1803 in Deal, Kent. From its inception Denne offered a range of services as builders, joiners, brick makers and funeral directors.
While the main focus has always been on construction, the company has adapted to the constantly changing economic climate for more than two centuries adding paint making, electrical, mechanical, maintenance and more recently air conditioning expertise to its portfolio of services.
In the 1980s, Denne’s construction activities concentrated on housing in London and the South East, becoming one of the most successful and respected contractors in the sector. Denne has a vast range of experience in affordable and social housing as well as high quality residential homes. The company is a leading provider of care facilities in the south east and its impressive portfolio of work is testament to this.
In 2006, Denne was acquired by the Leadbitter Group and then by Bouygues in 2011.
The integration of Leadbitter, Thomas Vale, Denne and Warings gives us an unparalleled combination of skills, expertise and reach across the country, delivering the benefits of our global expertise with local knowledge.
The business is proud to be part of the Bouygues Group of companies, which operate in over 80 countries delivering innovation and excellence across our chosen sectors.
